| Notes |
- !Albin Denton was always known by "Buck" Ellerbe or A.D. Ellerbe. Most all the
years I knew Grand daddy he was a farmer. He could do most anything that it
took to make a living, but I guess that farming was his favorite vocation. He
raised lots of strawberries, pepper, and vegetables in general. He grew up
knowing the timber and lumber trade, learning it from his father and
grandfather. I used to pick strawberries for him when I was a kid. All of us
kids in the area used to pick berries for the farmers around the community.
We had back then what they called strawberry school. We started school in
early
April and got out of school on the 23rd of Dec. That all changed in 1949. J.
Denton Cash 3 Nov. 1995.
Buck Ellerbe had one of the best blacksmith-machinist shops in the Carter's Corner area and any where East of Lakeland. He had over head irrigation for his fields and that was a first for that area at that time which was in the 40s and earlier. He had a large water tank made of wood that he pumped water into with a small electric pump and he got his pressure from the tank which was maonted on a tall tower. There was a overflow drain at the top of the tank to tell when it was full. He made most of his farm equipment such as a resetting machine for tomatoes and pepper...On one of grandaddy's feet he had a toe missing next to his big toe. He always told me a battle ship run over it and cut it off. I found out one day that he cut it off with a axe. I was Grand-daddy's oldest grand child and spent lots of time with him and Aunt Biddy, his second wife, as she babysat me while Mom worked in the strawberry fields. I was almost raised in a strawberry patch.
